Mental & Sports Performance

Achieve Peak Performance with Mental Training & Strategic Coaching

A Holistic Approach for Both Coaches and Players
Performing at the highest levels of your gift—whether as a player or a coach—is one of the most affirming and surreal experiences of a lifetime. If you’ve made it to the NBA or NBA G League or are coaching at an elite level, you’ve already proven your skill and dedication to excellence. Your talent and strategy are the foundation of your success, and thriving in high-stakes environments demands more than physical prowess or playbooks—emotional resilience and mental clarity are imperative.

My work is rooted in helping people navigate their challenges and pursue their dreams with confidence, focus, and clarity. My extensive experience of working with clients from diverse backgrounds, coupled with my own experiences, has shown me the importance of managing stress, sustaining motivation, and balancing success with well-being.

My approach combines mindfulness, somatic awareness, and family systems therapy with the strategic elegance of basketball’s spiritual nature to create a dynamic framework for personal and relational success. This synthesis reflects the balance, adaptability, and intentionality required both on the court and in life.

High-stakes environments are as mentally demanding as they are physically. By addressing the emotional and mental strain that comes with the game, players and coaches will enhance performance, build resilience, and sustain their passion for basketball.

  • Mindfulness: Inspired by Phil Jackson’s More Than a Game, mindfulness helps players and coaches stay present, reduce distractions, and maintain focus during critical moments.
  • Somatic Awareness: Using body-based techniques to manage stress, channel energy effectively, and recover quickly from setbacks.
  • Mental Clarity and Emotional Resilience: Tools to manage pressure, adapt to change, and find balance on and off the court.
  • Family Systems Approach: Strengthening team dynamics by understanding roles, communication, and relational patterns.

Being a professional athlete comes with incredible opportunities, but also unique challenges:

  • Adapting to new environments: Whether you’re traveling, moving across the country, or adjusting to a new team and coaching staff, the transition can bring culture shock, homesickness, and logistical stress.
  • Balancing intense demands: The relentless schedule of games, practices, and travel can strain both body and mind, especially when paired with media scrutiny or personal expectations.
  • Managing good news and big breaks: Exciting opportunities and career milestones often bring unexpected stress and pressure to meet new expectations.

Coaches have the unique responsibility of not only fostering technical excellence but also creating a culture of trust, adaptability, and mental toughness. Drawing from mindfulness practices, somatic approaches, and family systems principles, I work with coaches to:

  • Cultivate team synergy: Learn how to adapt the triangle offense philosophy to build balance and harmony among players, fostering trust and collaboration.
  • Navigate team dynamics: Using insights from family systems therapy, I help identify and address relational patterns that may impact performance and cohesion.
  • Support individual player growth: Understand how to coach players through the emotional ups and downs of high performance, including adjusting to new roles or handling pressure during critical moments.

What does it mean to be a “frontloading conduit” for players?2025-01-08T09:14:55-08:00

As a frontloading conduit, I provide players with a foundation of psychological and spiritual tools to prepare them for integrating transformative lessons into their performance. This means creating a space where players can process their experiences in practice and games, address challenges, and build the mindset needed to thrive under high-pressure conditions.

How does your approach draw from Phil Jackson’s philosophy?2025-01-08T09:15:41-08:00

Phil Jackson’s philosophy emphasizes mindfulness, team cohesion, and individual growth, principles I bring into my work with players. My 20 years living in Santa Cruz and my graduate studies at the University of Montana have deeply influenced my understanding of these values. Immersion in the culture of these places has shaped my connection to a grander approach where many of Jackson’s ideals—balance, focus, and collective harmony—naturally align. By blending these concepts, I help athletes synchronize their mental, emotional, and physical states, enabling them to perform at their best while strengthening their connection to their team and the game itself.

How does your work connect to concepts like the Triangle offense?2025-01-08T09:16:06-08:00

The Triangle offense isn’t just a strategy; it’s about balance, adaptability, and connection. I help players internalize these deeper principles, showing them how to harmonize their personal ambitions with the goals of the team. By focusing on cohesion and trust, players are better equipped to embody the teamwork that wins championships.

How do mindfulness and somatic practices fit into basketball performance?2025-01-08T09:16:30-08:00

Mindfulness techniques help players stay present and focused, while somatic practices help them manage energy and regulate emotions during intense moments. Together, these practices enhance their ability to remain calm, composed, and in control, both on and off the court.

What role does your approach play in helping players handle high-pressure environments?2025-01-08T09:17:49-08:00

High-pressure environments demand more than physical skill; they require clarity, resilience, and emotional and energetic balance. I work with players to process their experiences, manage stress, and turn challenges into growth opportunities. This preparation helps them approach the game with confidence and a grounded perspective.

Why is processing practice and game experiences important?2025-01-08T09:18:12-08:00

Reflecting on what happens in practice and games allows players to identify lessons, celebrate wins, and learn from setbacks. This process primes them for deeper integration of the psychological and spiritual insights that have fueled championship-winning teams. It’s about helping players not only excel on the court but also grow as individuals.

How does your work empower players to create their legacy?2025-01-08T09:18:33-08:00

By grounding players in purpose and teaching them to embody focus, balance, and connection, I help them unlock their full potential. They are not just preparing for the next game but building the mindset and habits that will define their careers and lives beyond basketball.

Mindfulness & Somatics

Managing Energy and Power

Drawing inspiration from Zen practices and somatic techniques, I teach coaches and players how to regulate and wield their energy, stay present, and navigate stress with agility and focus.

  • Presence on the Court and in Life: Mindfulness helps clients stay attuned to the flow of the moment—whether responding to a defender or making a critical life decision.
  • Embodied Power: By incorporating somatic tools like grounding and breathwork, I guide clients to align their mental clarity with physical strength, ensuring their energy flows purposefully in high-pressure situations.
  • Sustaining Momentum: Somatic awareness reinforces the ability to recover quickly after setbacks, maintaining rhythm and composure in the face of challenges.

The Triangle

Flow, Connection, and Adaptability

In basketball, the triangle offense exemplifies a philosophy of balanced relationships, fluid collaboration, and strategic positioning. These principles mirror essential components of family systems therapy and personal growth:

  • Flow and Connection: The triangle emphasizes seamless movement and mutual support, much like healthy relationships. Together we cultivate balance within interactions—whether on a team, within a family, or in individual pursuits.
  • Adapting to Challenges: The triangle’s flexibility in responding to defenses mirrors the ability to adapt in life. I guide clients to recognize patterns, adjust strategies, and find openings for success in dynamic situations.
  • Relational Dynamics and the Team: Just as each player’s role in the triangle offense is vital to its success, understanding personal and relational roles in systems is key to building harmony and resilience.

Family Systems

Strengthening Teamwork and Dynamics

Drawing from family systems therapy, we identify and transform unproductive dynamics that hinder personal and relational growth:

  • Team as Family: Whether in sports, business, or personal relationships, the team operates as a family system. Understanding these dynamics fosters trust, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.
  • Role Clarity: Drawing from Salvador Minuchin’s structural therapy, I guide clients to establish clear roles and boundaries that optimize performance and reduce conflict.
  • Strategic Communication: Inspired by Virginia Satir’s emphasis on congruent communication, I teach clients how to express their needs and goals effectively, ensuring alignment within their “team.”

A Unified Framework for Thriving

By integrating mindfulness, somatic practices, and the strategic lessons of basketball’s triangle offense, I offer a framework that empowers clients to:

  • Achieve Flow: Stay present, regulate emotions, and maximize energy in high-stakes situations.
  • Strengthen Collaboration: Build meaningful connections by understanding relational dynamics and fostering mutual support.
  • Adapt with Confidence: Navigate setbacks and challenges with agility, finding opportunities for growth and success.

This approach bridges the wisdom of therapeutic traditions with the strategic artistry of basketball, helping clients thrive both on and off the court.
